Last year the Baltic Sea Festival became a partner of Östersjöfestivalen/Baltic Sea Festival – a prestigious classical music festival organised by the Swedish Radio since 2002. One of the founders of the festival is Esa-Pekki Salonen, an exquisite composer and conductor. Due to the pandemic, last year the festival was cancelled, but the cooperation is ongoing and we hope this will result in diverse meetings with artists and people of culture from the Baltic Sea Region. The festival is taking place between 9th and 18th of September 2021. We prepared its Tricity scene on 11th of September.
5:00 pm – CONCERT
The theme of the musical part of the Baltic Sea Festival is going to be work of Polish female composers. Those works are hardly known even in Poland. By choosing this kind of repertoire we aim to emphasise the active role of women in Polish cultural heritage. The programme includes pieces of Maria Szymanowska, Grażyna Bacewicz, Elżbieta Sikora and Anna Rocławska-Musiałczyk. By presenting a selection of short forms we are able to show a review in all its diversity of this not yet popular work. We invited three soloists to perform: Monika Kaźmierczak (carillon), Maciej Kułakowski (cello) and Krzysztof Komendarek-Tymendorf (viola). The musicians will be accompanied by the Polish Chamber Philharmonic in Sopot conducted by Maestro Wojciech Rajski.
The concert will consist of live musical performance as well as recorded music played during presentation of most iconic monuments of Gdańsk. The event will be streamed live and additionally available with English subtitles on 14th of September on: https://www.berwaldhallen.se/en/balticseafestival/
6:00 pm – TALK
“Art as Resistance” is a meeting dedicated to work of artists hidden under a pseudonym Maryla Szymiczkowa: Jacek Dehnel and Piotr Tarczyński. The writers will have the opportunity to talk about their vision of art and its role in the times full of borders. The talk will be moderated by Anna Dziewit-Meller – writer and journalist. The talk will be streamed and later available with English subtitles.
7:00 pm – BROADCAST OF THE CONCERT IN BERWALDHALLEN (STOCKHOLM)
From Bach’s baroque universe to Strawinski’s cosmos.
Performers: Klaus Mäkelä – main conductor who will conduct the Swedish Radio Symphonic Orchestra, Petter Mattei – world famous baritone and the legendary violinist Miklós Perényi.
It will be a wonderful event with music composed during the centuries. Additionally, the Swedish Radio Choir will perform the beautiful “Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich” by Bach.
